The rule we apply: Claude Code for the bulk of supervised coding work; Devin for isolated tasks where the sandbox isolation is genuinely valuable and the task-priced economics suit the workload. The cost variance on Devin is the variable that decides the call.
Where Devin wins
- Sandbox isolation. Devin runs in a managed environment; the agent cannot accidentally damage your local machine because it does not have access to your local machine.
- Truly isolated tasks with clear acceptance criteria where you want to hand off and walk away.
- Browser-tool workflows Claude Code does not have natively.
Where Claude Code wins
- Cost predictability. Subscription pricing with usage tiers is easier to budget than task-priced.
- Multi-task workflows. Claude Code holds context across sessions in a way Devin does not.
- Plan transparency. Claude Code shows its plan more clearly; debugging a Claude Code task that is going wrong is faster.
Cost comparison
Devin's task pricing means budget is "P50 cost-per-task plus contingency for P95 variance." Claude Code's subscription means budget is "per-engineer monthly plus model passthrough." At our pipeline volume, Claude Code with structure is meaningfully cheaper per resolved task. Devin earns its slot for tasks where the sandbox itself is the feature, not for general-purpose coding work.
Three scenarios, three decisions
- Add a feature to a known module: Claude Code. Lower variance, faster turnaround.
- Reproduce and isolate a hard-to-reproduce bug in an unknown environment: Devin. The sandbox earns its keep.
- Run a large refactor across the codebase: Claude Code with a planning step.
